It's Friday night, the kids want chicken, and someone in the car asks the question every Muslim family knows: "Is this one halal?" In the UK the honest answer is usually "it depends on the branch". Here's a quick, practical guide to the big chains — and how to check before you queue.
The short version
- KFC — Some branches — check KFC's halal restaurant list
- Nando's — Some branches — listed on Nando's website
- Subway — Some stores, with halal signage
- Popeyes — Says its chicken is halal
- Wingstop — Says its chicken is halal
- McDonald's — No halal meat
- Burger King — Generally no halal meat
- Domino's — Not halal; pork toppings in the kitchen
- Five Guys — Not halal; bacon on the grill
- Greggs — Not halal-certified
Restaurants change suppliers and halal status can change, so treat this as a starting point, not the final word. Each link above has the details and what to ask.
Why "some branches" is so common
Big chains in the UK usually run halal in selected restaurants — often in areas with large Muslim communities — rather than across the whole country. That means two KFCs ten minutes apart can be different. The branch that is halal will normally display its certificate near the counter.
Stunned or unstunned?
Even when a branch is halal, certifiers don't all follow the same rules. Some accept chicken that was stunned before slaughter, as long as the bird was still alive; others accept no stunning at all. If this matters to you, ask which certifier the restaurant uses and read our explainer on stunned meat and the HMC vs HFA guide.
What about the fries and veggie options?
At non-halal chains, many Muslims order fries, fish or vegetarian items. Whether that's okay for you depends on how strict you are about shared fryers, grills and utensils. We cover the different views in eating at a non-halal restaurant.
A 30-second check before you order
- Open the chain's restaurant finder and look for a halal filter or list.
- Look for the halal certificate on display, and check the date.
- Ask staff: "Is all the chicken halal here, and is anything cooked with pork?"
- For desserts and shakes, check for gelatine and alcohol-based flavourings.
