Halal Subway stores
In a statement reported in May 2014, Subway said it had not switched to halal across the chain. It said it opened halal stores deliberately, since 2007, based on local demand and demographics, and that those stores sold turkey ham and turkey rashers in place of ham and bacon. It also said: "All Halal meats are certified by the appropriate Halal authorities." The same report says Subway required its halal suppliers to stun animals before slaughter, which matters if you only eat unstunned meat. See Halal Focus's report of the statement.
That statement is more than ten years old and we have not seen Subway's current wording, so treat it as background. Halal stores usually show this on the menu panels and window, and Subway's store locator and the branch itself are the way to confirm one.
Other stores
In standard stores the meat is not halal and pork products such as ham and bacon are prepared on the same counter. Vegetarian subs still share knives and surfaces.
How to check a branch
Halal status can differ from one branch to the next and can change. Check the brand's own restaurant finder or allergen and halal page, look for the certificate on display, and ask staff which items are halal and how they are cooked.
