Editorial Policy

Halal Check Online is an information service. Its classifications are informational assessments, not formal fatwas or halal certification. It is not a halal certification body and it does not inspect factories or certify products.

Who is responsible

The content is written and maintained by Hafiz Nasir Mehmood, described as: Quran Hafiz and Islamic researcher. This site lists no other staff, scholar or reviewer. Contact: info@halalcheckonline.com.

What review means here

  • Editorial check: the editor writes the page, checks it against the sources it links to, and runs the automatic consistency checks described in How we decide.
  • Scholar review: has not taken place for any page. We will not describe a page as scholar-reviewed unless a named person has reviewed it, and we will publish who and when.
  • We do not publish reviewer qualifications we cannot verify.

How we write

  • We summarise the recognised positions of the schools and of named fatwa bodies. We do not issue rulings.
  • Where scholars differ we show each view and say so.
  • A claim that depends on a religious text or ruling links to it. Where we have no source we say so, or leave the claim out.
  • Product statements about a brand (for example "the maker says its UK gelatine is pork") name the maker's own statement or the retailer's listing, and say when it was read.
  • We do not use information from a source we have not read.

Dates

An ingredient or E-number page shows the date its classification was audited. Other pages show the date the page was last reviewed by the editor. A date is changed only when the content was actually checked, never automatically. Product pages show when the product data was fetched.

Corrections

  1. Send the page, what is wrong and a source if you have one to info@halalcheckonline.com, or use the "Suggest a correction" link at the foot of an ingredient or E-number page.
  2. We read it, check it against the sources, and reply when we can. We are a small project and cannot promise a reply time, but corrections that include a source are handled first.
  3. If the correction holds up we change the page and its date. If a classification changes, the reason and reference on the page change with it.
  4. If it does not hold up, we say why.
  5. Product ingredient data comes from Open Food Facts. Fixing it there fixes it for everyone, and our pages pick up the change the next time we refresh product data.

Records still to be sourced

Records that make a general claim without a reference yet (5): insect-protein, squalene, placenta, snail-mucin, castoreum.

What we do not claim

  • That the information is independently verified or scholar-approved.
  • That any halal certifier has approved or endorsed this website.
  • That a result is a certificate, a fatwa or a guarantee about a product.

How the site is paid for

The site shows Google advertising and some affiliate links, which are marked. Advertising and affiliate links do not change a classification. Sponsored placements, if any, are labelled.
