Is Silk Haram for Men?

Quick answer Haram

The majority of scholars hold that pure silk clothing is haram for men and halal for women, based on clear hadith. Small amounts — such as a trim up to about four fingers wide — and silk worn for a medical need are allowed. Artificial "silk" (satin, polyester) is not real silk.

What counts

  • Real silk from silkworms — not polyester or viscose satin.
  • Mixed fabrics where silk is the minority are allowed by many scholars.

See gold for men.

Silk and ties

The hadith about silk say that it is forbidden for men and permitted for women. Scholars allow small amounts, such as trim, and silk used for medical reasons.

Silk ties, shirts and pocket squares are covered by the ruling. Mixed fabrics with a small silk content raise the question of proportion.
