Is Shaving Your Beard Haram?

Quick answer Scholars differ

Scholars differ. The four Sunni schools traditionally hold that growing the beard is required, so shaving it off is haram (or strongly disliked in some Shafi'i opinions). Trimming is allowed by most. Some contemporary scholars consider it a strong sunnah rather than an obligation.

The evidence

Several hadith instruct men to let the beard grow and trim the moustache. Schools differ on the minimum length and on trimming.

Beards: schools of thought

The hadith that command growing the beard and trimming the moustache are the basis for the traditional ruling. The Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools treat shaving as forbidden, and Shafi'i opinions range from disliked to forbidden.

Some contemporary scholars regard it as a strong sunnah. Trimming length is a question of its own, and many allow it beyond a fist length.
