Ingredients to check
- Carmine (CI 75470): made from insects; scholars differ: see E120.
- Tallow or lanolin: animal fats; lanolin from sheep's wool is accepted by most scholars.
Wudu
Long-lasting or waterproof lipsticks may stop water reaching the lips; many scholars advise removing them before wudu.
Lipstick ingredients
Lipsticks use waxes, oils and pigments. Red shades have used carmine (CI 75470) from cochineal insects, and some formulas contain lanolin or animal-derived fats. The ingredient list shows these.
Vegan lipsticks avoid them, and some brands carry halal certification.
