Is Shake Shack Halal in the UK?

Quick answer It depends

Shake Shack in the UK does not describe its beef or chicken as halal, and bacon is on the menu. Its mushroom burger is vegetarian, but it is cooked in the same kitchen.

How to check a branch

Look for a halal certificate on display and check its date, check the chain's own website or app, and ask staff which items are halal and how they are cooked. Franchise branches can differ from each other.

What Shake Shack UK says

Shake Shack UK publishes a halal section in its FAQ. It says that in all UK locations the beef patty is halal-certified as a raw product, and that its chicken breast is also halal-certified as a raw product.

Bacon differs by restaurant. The Manchester Trafford Centre restaurant serves turkey bacon that is halal-certified as a raw product. Other UK restaurants serve pork bacon, which is not halal.

The FAQ also says the kitchens are not exclusively halal, so Shake Shack UK is not a fully halal-certified restaurant. A raw-product certificate covers the meat before it is cooked. It does not say whether grills or fryers are shared, so ask staff if that matters to you.
