Is Pret a Manger halal?

Quick answer It depends

Pret a Manger does not describe its meat as halal, and some products contain pork. Its vegetarian and vegan ranges contain no meat. Pret publishes ingredient and allergen details for each item, so check the product before buying.

What to check

  • Meat sandwiches and hot food: not halal-certified.
  • Cakes and desserts: check for gelatine.
  • Drinks: check flavoured drinks for alcohol-based flavourings.

How to check a branch

Look for a halal certificate on display and check its date, check the chain's own website or app, and ask staff which items are halal and how they are cooked. Franchise branches can differ from each other.

What we found about Pret

We found no halal statement on Pret's own site. A halal guide says Pret is not halal certified in the UK, and that its standard menu includes chicken that is not halal slaughtered and bacon. Veggie Pret shops are meat-free but not certified halal.

In 2019 a customer reported that a tuna sandwich he had eaten for years was not halal, which was covered by Eastern Eye. Ask staff and check the ingredient labels, which Pret publishes.
