More about omega-3 (fish or algae)

Omega-3 fatty acids are fats the body needs. The main long-chain forms are EPA and DHA, found in oily fish, fish oil, krill oil and algae oil. The plant form, ALA, is found in flaxseed, chia and walnuts.

Supplements are sold as fish oil, krill oil or algal oil, and the capsule shell is often gelatine, which is a separate ingredient to check.

Is omega-3 (fish or algae) vegetarian or vegan?

It depends on the source. Fish oil is not vegetarian; algae oil is vegetarian and vegan.

Fish oil and omega-3: the short answer

Fish oil is halal in every school of thought, because fish is halal and does not need slaughter. Omega-3 from algae is halal too. The part to check is the capsule: most soft capsules are made of gelatine, which in the UK is usually from cattle or pigs.

Halal fish oil brands

Several supplement brands sell omega-3 in fish-gelatine or plant capsules, and some carry halal certification from recognised bodies. As with food, look for a named certifier's logo on the pack, and check that the capsule material is stated. A product that says "gelatine" without a source is best avoided.

Omega-3 in food

DHA and EPA are added to some baby formula, milks, eggs and spreads. In food they usually come from fish or algal oil and are halal. See baby formula.
