Are Tic Tacs Halal?

Quick answer It depends

Most Tic Tac flavours contain no pork, gelatine or alcohol, and Ferrero says several Tic Tac flavours are halal-certified in some countries. UK packs are not usually certified, and some fruit flavours have used carmine (E120) or other animal-derived colours. Mint flavours are the simplest choice; check the colours on fruit flavours.

Mint and fruit flavours

Fresh Mint and Spearmint Tic Tacs are made from sugar, maltodextrin, thickeners, flavourings and a glaze. Fruit flavours add colours, and some have used carmine, made from insects, which scholars differ on. See E120.

The glaze

Tic Tacs are coated to give them their shine. Check the ingredients for shellac (E904), an insect resin on which scholars differ, so our checker marks it Doubtful. See E904.

Halal certification

Ferrero has said that in some parts of the world several Tic Tac flavours are halal and kosher certified. Look for a halal logo on the pack where you live.
