Are M&M's Halal?

Quick answer It depends

M&M's are not halal-certified in the UK. Mars has told UK customers that M&M's sold in the UK are not suitable for vegetarians because of an animal-derived additive, usually reported to be carmine (E120), which scholars differ on. They contain no pork or gelatine. Check the colours on the pack.

The colour question

Some UK M&M's have used carmine (cochineal, E120) for red colours. Carmine is made from insects, and scholars differ on whether it is halal. Our checker lets you choose how it is treated in your settings. See E120.

Other ingredients

Milk chocolate, sugar, peanuts and plant-based ingredients are halal. Some varieties list emulsifiers such as E471 without a source.

Varieties differ

Peanut, chocolate, crispy and seasonal M&M's have different colour lists. Read the pack, especially for red and brown sweets.
