Is KitKat Halal?

Quick answer It depends

The standard UK KitKat contains no meat, gelatine or alcohol — its ingredients are milk, cocoa, sugar, wheat flour and plant-based emulsifier. It is halal-certified in many countries but not in the UK, so most Muslims treat it as fine after checking the pack.

What is in it

A classic KitKat is wafer and milk chocolate. The emulsifier is usually sunflower or soya lecithin, which is plant-based. There is no gelatine or animal fat in the standard bar.

Certification

Nestlé produces halal-certified KitKat in many Muslim-majority countries. UK-made bars are not certified, which is why the answer is "check the pack" rather than a logo.

Limited editions

Special flavours can add new ingredients such as flavourings or fillings. Read the list each time.

How to check it yourself

Recipes differ between countries and change over time. Look for a halal logo, then read the ingredients on the pack you are holding — or scan the barcode and let our halal checker flag anything doubtful.
