UK and US recipes differ
UK Starburst (once called Opal Fruits) is made without gelatine. Classic US Starburst chews have used gelatine and a confectioner's glaze, and Starburst Gummies contain gelatine. Imported American sweets follow the US recipe.
What to check
- "Gelatine" in the ingredients. In the UK and US, unlabelled gelatine is usually pork.
- Confectioner's glaze or shellac (E904), an insect resin some scholars avoid.
- A vegetarian label, which rules out gelatine.
See gelatine-free sweets in the UK.
Starburst in the UK and abroad
UK Starburst fruit chews are made by Mars Wrigley and carry a vegetarian label. In the US, Starburst chews have contained gelatine in the past, and the Starburst gummies product does.
Packs from different countries differ, so the ingredient list on the pack in your hand is what counts. Our page does not replace reading the label.
