Are Sausage Rolls Halal?

Quick answer It depends

Standard sausage rolls are pork, so they are not halal. Halal sausage rolls made with chicken or beef are sold by halal bakeries and some shops, and vegan sausage rolls avoid meat altogether. Check the pastry fat too.

The filling

In the UK, "sausage meat" means pork unless it says otherwise. Chicken and beef versions are halal only if the meat is halal.

Vegan sausage rolls

Vegan versions use mycoprotein or soya and vegetable pastry. They avoid the meat question, though bakeries may bake them alongside pork: see is Greggs halal?

Sausage rolls and pastry

A sausage roll is sausage meat wrapped in puff or flaky pastry. In the UK, sausage meat is pork unless the pack says otherwise. Pastry is made with butter, margarine or vegetable fat, and some use lard.

Vegan and halal sausage rolls exist. Our Greggs page covers its vegan sausage roll. A mixed bakery cooks pork and non-pork rolls in the same oven.
