Why Maoam is not halal in the UK
Maoam chews get their texture partly from gelatine, and Maoam belongs to Haribo. Haribo UK's FAQ, which we read on 6 November 2026, answers the question "What gelatine do you use in your products?" with: "Our UK range of products contains gelatine deriving from pork. This includes our MAOAM range, and Chamallows."
Stripes, Bloxx, Joystixx and other Maoam
Haribo's answer names the Maoam range as a whole, so it covers Stripes, Bloxx, Joystixx, Pinballs and the rest of the range sold in the UK. Check the pack anyway, since recipes change and imported packs differ.
Halal Maoam
Haribo UK says: "The only exception are our Halal products where beef gelatine is used, and the products are clearly marked." Its FAQ does not say where those are made or sold, or who certifies them, so look for the halal marking on the pack and check who certified it. Beef gelatine on its own is not halal unless the cattle were slaughtered in the Islamic way.
What to check
- A halal marking from a named certifier.
- Gelatine on the list with no halal marking: for Haribo UK's standard range that means pork gelatine.
- Colours: some fruit chews use carmine (E120), which scholars differ on.
