Are Jelly Belly Jelly Beans Halal?

Quick answer It depends

Jelly Belly jelly beans are set with starch rather than gelatine, and some sellers list them as halal, but Jelly Belly does not hold a recognised halal certification for its beans. They are glazed with beeswax and shellac (E904), an insect resin some Muslims avoid. A few Jelly Belly products, such as some gummies, contain gelatine, so check the pack.

What is in a Jelly Belly bean

The beans are made from sugar, corn syrup, modified starch, flavourings and colours, and glazed with beeswax (E901) and shellac (E904). There is no gelatine in the standard beans.

The glaze question

Shellac is a resin from lac insects. Scholars differ on it, and our checker marks it Doubtful whichever way you set the insect preference, which only affects carmine (E120). See E904.

Other Jelly Belly products

Gummies, sours and some special lines differ. Read the ingredients for gelatine and carmine (E120).
