Is Dating Haram in Islam?

Quick answer Haram

Dating in the usual sense, a private romantic relationship before marriage, is not allowed. Islam permits getting to know a possible spouse with the intention of marriage, in a respectful way, often with family involved and without being alone together.

What is avoided

Being alone together (khalwa), physical intimacy and relationships with no intention of marriage.

Getting to know someone for marriage

Meeting in public or with family, talking about values and goals, and involving a wali are common ways families support this. See marrying a non-Muslim.

Getting to know a spouse

Scholars allow a couple to meet with the intention of marriage, with family or a chaperone and no seclusion. Matrimonial events and apps are used for introductions.

The concerns with dating are being alone together, physical contact and relationships without intent to marry. Istikhara and family consultation are common steps.
