Is a bank current account halal?

Quick answer It depends

Most scholars allow a normal current account because people need one to receive wages and pay bills, especially when it pays no interest. Avoid earning interest — or give any interest you receive to charity — and consider an Islamic bank account where available.

Need and interest

A current account that pays no interest is widely accepted. If an account pays interest, many scholars advise giving it to charity without expecting reward. See savings account interest and working in a bank.

A bank account without interest

A current account is a place to receive wages and pay bills. Most UK current accounts pay no interest, or very little, on balances.

Islamic banks in the UK offer current accounts. If your account pays interest, scholars advise giving the interest to charity and not keeping it.
