Is It Halal to Open a Savings Account?

Quick answer It depends

Keeping money in a bank is fine, but earning interest (riba) is forbidden. Choose an Islamic savings account, which pays an expected profit rate from permitted investments instead of interest. If you already have interest, most scholars advise giving it to charity without expecting reward, rather than keeping it.

Current accounts vs savings accounts

A current account that pays no interest is permissible for keeping money safe. The issue is accounts that pay interest, which is riba.

Islamic savings accounts

These invest your money in Shariah-compliant activities and pay a share of the profit, usually as an "expected profit rate". In the UK they are protected by the same deposit guarantee scheme as other accounts.

If you have received interest

Most scholars say to give interest to charity (especially to benefit the poor or public causes), with the intention of getting rid of it rather than earning reward. Do not use it for yourself.
