Is a Baby Shower Haram?

Quick answer Scholars differ

Scholars differ. Some discourage baby showers as a custom borrowed from other cultures; others allow a gathering of women with gifts and food as a way of supporting the mother. The Islamic celebration of a birth is the aqiqah, held after the baby is born.

The aqiqah

The Sunnah is to celebrate a birth with an aqiqah (sacrificing an animal and sharing the meat), usually on the seventh day.

Baby showers

Many scholars see no harm in a modest gathering with gifts. Others avoid it as imitation or because of superstitions sometimes attached to it.

Aqiqah and baby showers

Aqiqah is the sunnah of sacrificing sheep or goats on the seventh day after birth, naming the baby and shaving the baby's head. Meat is shared with family and the poor.

Gifts to a new mother are encouraged. Scholars who discourage baby showers do so because it is a custom adopted from others, not because gifts are wrong.
