Is Mother's Day Haram?

Quick answer Scholars differ

Scholars differ. Islam places great emphasis on honouring parents every day. Some scholars discourage marking Mother's Day as a festival because it is not an Islamic occasion; many others see no harm in gifts and kindness on the day, as long as it is not treated as religious.

Also asked as: “Can Muslims celebrate Mother's Day?” · “Is Father's Day haram?”

The cautious view

Islam has two festivals, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Some scholars avoid adopting other annual celebrations.

The more lenient view

Others say Mother's Day is a social custom, not a religious one, and honouring one's mother is always good.

The same views apply to Father's Day.

Mother's Day and honouring parents

Mothering Sunday in the UK began as a Christian day for visiting the mother church, and became a day of gifts for mothers. Islam commands kindness to parents at all times (17:23).

Scholars who allow gifts say honouring your mother on any day is good. Those who discourage it do not want a fixed festival outside the two Eids.
