About packaging gases
Packaging gases are blown into a pack before it is sealed. Nitrogen (E941) fills crisp bags and cushions the contents. Argon, helium and oxygen are used in other food and drink packs, to slow spoilage. Nitrous oxide (E942) is the gas in whipped cream chargers.
Butane, isobutane and propane (E943a, E943b, E944) are propellants in aerosol cooking sprays. They are gases, with no animal source and no alcohol.
Packs that use these gases state that the food is packaged in a protective atmosphere. The gas itself does not stay in the food.
