Is Woolworths chicken halal? Halal meat at Woolworths

Australia's largest supermarket chain, with Metro stores and online delivery.

Is Woolworths chicken halal?

Woolworths in Australia sells halal-certified chicken in selected stores, but not every chicken product is halal-certified. Woolworths launched its own halal chicken brand, Al-Sadiq ("truthful" in Arabic), certified by the Islamic Council of Queensland. It was first sold in about 20 stores near large Muslim communities, such as Bankstown in western Sydney. Woolworths has also offered halal-certified hot roast chickens at selected stores, including Roselands, Bass Hill, Auburn, Bankstown, Lakemba and Granville.

Its regular own-brand chicken is RSPCA Approved, which is a separate scheme from halal. The RSPCA has pointed out that RSPCA Approved does not mean halal, so look for a halal logo on the pack.

The rule at Woolworths: if the pack or label does not show a halal logo and name a certifier, do not assume it is halal.

Halal ranges differ by store. Stores in suburbs with large Muslim communities in Sydney and Melbourne usually have the widest range.

Stunning in Australia

Most halal-certified meat in Australia comes from animals stunned before slaughter, which many Australian certifiers accept. If you only eat meat from animals that were not stunned, ask the certifier named on the pack about its rules. See is stunned meat halal?

Woolworths own-brand food

For sweets, biscuits, cheese, snacks and sauces, halal status depends on the ingredients. Australian labels use INS numbers without the "E", so 471 on a Woolworths label is the same as E471. Watch for:

  • Gelatine in lollies, yoghurts and desserts.
  • 120 (carmine) in pink and red foods. See E120.
  • 471 and other emulsifiers without a stated plant source.
  • Cheese made with animal rennet. See is cheese halal?

Scan any product with the halal checker, which recognises INS numbers.

Halal lollies and marshmallows at Woolworths

Most lollies and marshmallows are set with gelatine, which is often not halal. At Woolworths, look for:

  • Lollies with a halal logo, often imported from Turkey, Malaysia or the Middle East.
  • Vegan lollies, made with pectin or starch instead of gelatine.
  • Marshmallows that say halal or vegan on the pack. Standard marshmallows contain gelatine.

See halal sweets for what to check in any lolly.

Frequently asked questions

Does Woolworths sell halal meat?

Yes, in selected stores. Woolworths has sold its own Al-Sadiq halal chicken and halal-certified hot roast chickens in stores near large Muslim communities, plus branded halal meat. Check for a halal logo on the pack.

Is Woolworths hot roast chicken halal?

Only at selected stores that sell halal-certified hot roast chickens, such as some stores in western Sydney. Elsewhere, assume it is not halal unless the label says so.

Is all chicken in Australia halal?

No. Many large Australian poultry processors are halal-certified, but that does not mean every product is certified or labelled halal. Go by the logo on the pack you buy.

Who certifies Woolworths halal chicken?

The Al-Sadiq range was developed with certification from the Islamic Council of Queensland. Other halal products at Woolworths carry their own certifiers' logos.

Shopping halal at Woolworths

Look for a certifier logo, not just the word "halal"

On meat and ready meals, look for the logo of a recognised local halal certifier on the pack itself. See our list of halal certification bodies by country.

Read the vegetarian label carefully

A vegetarian label rules out meat, gelatine and animal rennet, but not alcohol. Check desserts, sauces and flavourings for wine, rum or spirit.

Watch the usual suspects

Gelatine in sweets and yoghurts, carmine (E120 / INS 120) in pink foods, emulsifiers such as E471 / INS 471 in bread and cakes, and animal rennet in cheese are the ones to check.

Halal meat varies by store

Which stores carry halal meat, and which brands, changes from store to store and over time. Check the pack, and ask staff if you are unsure.

FAQ

Is Woolworths own-brand food halal?

Some of it. Halal status depends on each product's ingredients, so Woolworths own-brand food ranges from fine to clearly haram. Scan the barcode or read the ingredients of the exact product.

Does Woolworths sell halal meat?

Some supermarkets stock halal-certified meat in selected stores, often as branded packs rather than own-brand. Ranges vary by store and change over time, so check for a certifier logo on the pack and ask in your local Woolworths.

Is "suitable for vegetarians" at Woolworths halal?

Not always. It rules out meat, gelatine and animal rennet, but alcohol can still be used, for example in desserts and sauces. Check the ingredient list for alcohol and doubtful E-numbers.
