Zabiha, hand-slaughtered and machine-slaughtered
US halal brands differ. Crescent Foods says its meat is hand-slaughtered. Some other brands use machine slaughter or stunning. If this matters to you, check the brand's website and the certifier named on the pack. Common US certifiers include IFANCA and ISNA Canada.
Walmart groceries and snacks
For sweets, snacks and baked goods, check the ingredients. US labels are a common source of hidden gelatine:
- Gelatin in gummies, marshmallows, yoghurt and frosted cereals. Unlabelled gelatin can be pork, so it is doubtful.
