Shopping halal at Sainsbury's
Look for a certifier logo, not just the word "halal"
On meat and ready meals, the clearest sign is the logo of a recognised certifier such as HMC or HFA. Check the logo is on the pack itself, not just on the shelf.
Read the vegetarian label carefully
"Suitable for vegetarians" rules out meat, gelatine and animal rennet, but not alcohol. Check desserts, sauces and flavourings for wine, rum or spirit.
Watch the usual suspects in own-brand food
Gelatine in sweets and yoghurts, E120 (carmine) in pink foods, E471 and other emulsifiers in bread and cakes, and animal rennet in cheese are the ones to check.
Halal meat varies by store
Which stores carry halal meat, and which brands, changes from branch to branch and over time. Check the pack, and ask staff at the counter if you are unsure.
FAQ
Is Sainsbury's own-brand food halal?
Some of it. Halal status depends on each product's ingredients, so Sainsbury's own-brand food ranges from fine to clearly haram. Scan the barcode or read the ingredients of the exact product.
Does Sainsbury's sell halal meat?
Some supermarkets stock halal-certified meat in selected stores, often as branded packs rather than own-brand. Ranges vary by store and change over time, so check for a certifier logo on the pack and ask in your local Sainsbury's.
Is "suitable for vegetarians" at Sainsbury's halal?
Not always. It rules out meat, gelatine and animal rennet, but alcohol can still be used, for example in desserts and sauces. Check the ingredient list for alcohol and doubtful E-numbers.
