Is Wagamama Halal?

Quick answer It depends

Wagamama in the UK does not describe its meat as halal, and some sauces may contain mirin or other alcohol-based ingredients. Many dishes can be made with tofu, prawns or vegetables — ask staff about the sauce as well as the protein.

Sauces

Japanese-style sauces such as teriyaki often contain mirin, a rice wine. Ask for the ingredient or allergen information for each dish.

How to check a branch

Look for a halal certificate on display and check its date, check the chain's own website or app, and ask staff which items are halal and how they are cooked. Franchise branches can differ from each other.

What we found about Wagamama

We found no halal statement on Wagamama's own site. A halal guide says Wagamama is not halal certified in the UK, that pork is on the menu and that mirin, a rice wine, is used in cooking. A shopping-centre listing for the Bracknell restaurant says Wagamama does not serve halal meat.

These are secondary sources, so ask your restaurant. Fish and vegetable dishes may avoid the meat question but can still be cooked with mirin.
