What to check
- Chicken: ask whether it is halal-certified today.
- Pepperoni and ham are pork.
- Cheese: see is mozzarella halal?
How to check a branch
Check the chain's own website or allergen guide, look for a halal certificate on display and its date, and ask staff which items are halal and how they are cooked. Franchise branches can differ from each other.
What PizzaExpress said about its chicken
In May 2014 PizzaExpress said it had never hidden that all the chicken in its dishes is halal slaughtered, and that none of its other meats are halal. It added that the birds are stunned before slaughter and that its chicken supplier is accredited by the British Retail Consortium.
That statement is from 2014, so ask the restaurant whether it is still current. Halal-slaughtered chicken is not the same as a halal restaurant: other meat on the menu, such as pepperoni, is pork, and certifiers differ on stunning. See our page on HMC and HFA.
