More about lactose
Lactose is the sugar found in milk. It is separated from whey and sold as a white powder, which is used as a bulking agent in tablets and capsules, and in infant formula, baking and sweets.
It is different from lactose intolerance, which is a matter of digestion, not of halal status. Lactose-free products are normally made with an added enzyme.
Lactose is also used as a filler in medicines, so many tablets and capsules contain it. If you avoid dairy for any reason, check the inactive ingredients of any medicine.
Is lactose vegetarian or vegan?
Lactose is vegetarian but not vegan, because it is made from milk.
Why we classify it this way
Halal Lactose is milk sugar, taken from milk or whey. Milk is a permitted animal product. Because whey can raise a rennet question, check the label if the dairy source matters to you.
Basis: No concern found. Made from plants, minerals, fermentation or synthesis, or from a permitted animal product. Nothing in normal production raises a pork, alcohol, insect or slaughter question.
