Is It Halal to Work Somewhere That Sells Alcohol or Pork?

Quick answer It depends

Scholars distinguish between direct and indirect involvement. Serving, selling or delivering alcohol is not permitted according to most scholars, because the Prophet ﷺ cursed those who carry and sell it. Working in a shop or restaurant where you are not handling alcohol or pork directly is permitted by many scholars, especially where other work is hard to find.

Alcohol

A hadith curses ten people connected to alcohol, including the one who serves it, sells it and carries it (Tirmidhi). Most scholars therefore say not to take roles centred on selling or serving alcohol, such as bar work.

Supermarkets and restaurants

Many scholars permit working in a supermarket, even if it sells alcohol, provided your job does not involve directly selling or handling it — for example stacking other aisles, or asking a colleague to scan alcohol at the till. Similarly, working at a fast-food chain is permitted by many if you can avoid preparing pork.

Practical steps

Discuss reasonable adjustments with your employer; UK employers often accommodate religious beliefs. Ask a scholar about your specific role.
