Is Tillamook Halal?

Quick answer It depends

Most Tillamook cheese is halal-certified. Tillamook says it has made its cheese with fermentation-produced rennet, which is vegetarian and certified halal and kosher, since 2016, and most of its cheeses carry halal certification. Its Maker's Reserve 10-Year Extra Sharp Cheddar is an exception. For Tillamook ice cream and other products, check the pack for a halal logo and ingredients such as alcohol or gelatine.

Why Tillamook cheese can be halal

The main halal question with cheese is rennet, the enzyme that sets the milk. Rennet from calves that were not slaughtered Islamically is a problem for many Muslims. Tillamook uses rennet made by fermentation, not taken from animals, and reports say the rennet and most of its cheeses are certified halal. See is cheese halal? and rennet.

The 2026 halal label row

In September 2026 some people online called for a boycott after noticing halal logos on Tillamook cheese. As news reports pointed out, the logo did not mean anything had been added: it confirms the rennet and process meet halal standards. Nothing about the cheese changed.

Exceptions and other products

  • Maker's Reserve 10-Year Extra Sharp Cheddar is reported not to be halal-certified.
  • Ice cream, butter and other products are separate. Check each pack for a halal logo, gelatine and alcohol, for example in rum or liqueur flavours.

Tillamook is a US brand and is rarely sold in the UK.
