Is Takaful Halal?

Quick answer Halal

Takaful — Islamic insurance — is designed to be halal: members contribute to a shared fund that pays claims, the fund is invested in Sharia-compliant assets, and surpluses can be shared. Most scholars accept it as the halal alternative to conventional insurance.

How it differs

Conventional insurance is debated because of uncertainty (gharar), gambling-like elements and interest-based investments. Takaful is built on mutual help instead. See is insurance halal?

Takaful in the UK

Takaful is a cooperative model: members contribute to a pool and claims are paid from it, with the operator running it for a fee or share of the profit. This is different from conventional insurance, where a company takes the risk.

A few takaful providers operate in the UK. Check whether the fund is invested in Sharia-compliant assets and whether there is a Sharia board.
