Is Organ Donation Halal?

Quick answer Scholars differ

Scholars differ. Many — including bodies such as the European Council for Fatwa and Research — permit organ donation, during life or after death, because saving a life is highly rewarded. Others prohibit it because of the sanctity of the body. In England, you can record your decision and your faith beliefs on the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Also asked as: “Can Muslims be organ donors?” · “Is it haram to donate organs after death?”

View 1: permitted

"Whoever saves a life, it is as if he saved all mankind" (Qur'an 5:32). Many scholars allow donation with consent, without payment, and without harming the donor.

View 2: not permitted

Others argue the body belongs to God and must not be harmed or divided after death, and raise concerns about how death is defined.

In the UK

England, Wales and Scotland use an "opt-out" system. You can register your decision either way, and state that your family should be consulted about your faith.
