Are Nerds Halal?

Quick answer It depends

Nerds are not halal-certified. Original Nerds contain no gelatine, but US Nerds list carmine (E120), an insect-based red colour that scholars differ on. Nerds Gummy Clusters contain gelatine, which in the US is usually pork, so most Muslims avoid them. Check the pack.

Original Nerds

Original Nerds are made from sugar, dextrose, acids and colours, with no gelatine. US packs list carmine for red and pink colours. Whether carmine is halal depends on the view you follow; our checker lets you choose in settings. See E120.

Nerds Gummy Clusters

The clusters have a gummy centre made with gelatine. The source is not stated on the pack, and in the US unlabelled gelatine is usually pork or mixed. Treat them as not halal unless a halal logo is shown.

Imported American sweets

Nerds sold in UK sweet shops are usually imported from the US with the US recipe. Read the label on the pack.
