Is Machine-Slaughtered Chicken Halal?

Quick answer Scholars differ

Scholars differ. Many hold that a rotating blade slaughter is acceptable if a Muslim operates it and says God's name, as happens in some certified plants. Many others — especially in the Hanafi school — require hand slaughter with God's name said for each bird, so they do not accept machine slaughter.

The key conditions

Islamic slaughter requires a Muslim (or, for many scholars, a Jew or Christian) to cut the throat with a sharp blade while saying God's name (tasmiyah).

Arguments for

If a Muslim switches on the machine with the tasmiyah and supervises it, some scholars count this as his act, similar to shooting an arrow.

Arguments against

Others say the tasmiyah must accompany each individual slaughter, that machines miss or mis-cut birds, and that hand slaughter is the only reliable method. Most UK certifiers publish their position — check before you buy.
