Is Haggis Halal?

Quick answer It depends

Traditional haggis is not halal unless the meat is. It is made from sheep's heart, liver and lungs with oatmeal, suet and spices. Some butchers make halal haggis from halal lamb, and vegetarian haggis is widely sold.

The ingredients

Sheep offal is halal when the sheep was slaughtered Islamically. Standard haggis is not halal-certified, and the suet may be beef fat from non-halal animals.

Options

  • Halal haggis from a halal butcher.
  • Vegetarian haggis made with beans, lentils and oats.

Haggis and what's in it

Haggis is Scotland's national dish, traditionally made of sheep's heart, liver and lungs minced with onion, oatmeal, suet and spices and cooked in a casing. The casing was originally a sheep's stomach, and many now use artificial casings.

Two things to check are the source of the offal and the casing. Vegetarian haggis uses lentils, beans and oats. It is eaten on Burns Night with neeps and tatties.
