"Brewed" ginger beer is fermented and can contain a small trace of alcohol. Many scholars allow traces under about 0.5% that cannot intoxicate; others avoid any fermented drink with alcohol.

Ginger beer: soft drink or alcoholic

Ginger beer began as a fermented drink, and some modern brands still make it with a ginger plant fermentation, so a small amount of alcohol can form. Most supermarket ginger beer is a carbonated soft drink with ginger extract.

Alcoholic ginger beers are labelled with an ABV, usually around 4 to 5%. Ginger ale is a different, milder drink.
