Is Dr Pepper Halal?

Dr Pepper contains no pork, gelatine or added alcohol, and most Muslims drink it. It is not halal-certified in the UK or US. Like other colas, its flavourings may contain a tiny trace of alcohol used as a carrier, which most scholars accept. The only real question is that trace.

What is in Dr Pepper

Dr Pepper is made from carbonated water, sugar or sweeteners, caramel colour, acids, caffeine and flavourings. None of these is an animal ingredient.

The alcohol question

Soft-drink flavourings are sometimes dissolved in a little alcohol. The amount left in the drink is far too small to intoxicate. Most scholars, including the Fiqh Council of North America in its ruling on colas, consider such drinks halal. A minority prefer to avoid them. See is Coca-Cola halal?
