Is Dancing Haram?

Quick answer Scholars differ

Scholars differ, but most allow women dancing among women, for example at weddings, and a husband and wife dancing privately. Mixed dancing between unrelated men and women, and dancing in clubs, is not allowed.

Also asked as: “Can Muslim women dance at weddings?” · “Is it haram to dance at home?”

Widely allowed

Celebrating weddings and Eid with joy is encouraged. Women dancing in women-only settings is accepted by most scholars.

Not allowed

Dancing with unrelated members of the opposite sex, and settings with alcohol.

Dancing and the occasion

Scholars who allow dancing point to the report that the Prophet ﷺ allowed people to play and celebrate on Eid. Weddings and Eid are the clearest settings.

The concerns are mixed gatherings, immodest dress, music with haram content and anything that leads to sin. Opinions on music itself differ, and affect how scholars see dancing.
