Is Cosmetic Surgery Halal?

Quick answer It depends

It depends on the reason. Scholars widely allow surgery to repair an injury, a birth defect or something causing real harm or distress. Surgery purely to change how one looks is not allowed by most scholars, as it changes Allah's creation without need.

Allowed: treatment and repair

Reconstructive surgery after an accident or burns, correcting a cleft lip, or removing a deformity is generally permitted.

Not allowed by most: purely cosmetic

Changing healthy features only to look different is seen as altering creation (An-Nisa 4:119). Scholars also weigh risks to health.

Cosmetic surgery

Surgery that corrects a defect, an injury or a condition that causes distress is widely accepted. Procedures like rhinoplasty can be reconstructive or cosmetic.

The line scholars draw is between treatment and changing appearance. In the UK, check that the surgeon is on the GMC specialist register and that the clinic is regulated.
