Are Collagen Supplements Halal?

Quick answer It depends

It depends on the source. Collagen powders and drinks are usually made from cattle (bovine), pigs (porcine) or fish (marine). Fish collagen is halal; bovine is halal only if certified; porcine is haram. Check the label for the source and a halal logo.

  • Porcine: pig skin: haram.

Capsules

Capsules may be gelatine. Look for HPMC or "vegetarian capsule".

Collagen powders and drinks

Collagen supplements are sold as powders, capsules and ready drinks. The source can be bovine (cattle hide), porcine (pig skin) or marine (fish skin and scales). The label does not always say.

Marine collagen is the simplest. For bovine collagen, ask for a halal certificate. Flavoured drinks also contain sweeteners and flavourings, which need the usual check.
