Is Coffee Halal?

Quick answer Halal

Yes. Coffee is halal and has been drunk by Muslims for centuries. Plain coffee, espresso and instant coffee are all fine. Check flavoured syrups and liqueur coffees, which can contain alcohol.

Why coffee is halal

Coffee comes from roasted beans and does not intoxicate. The caffeine in it is not treated like alcohol by any school of thought.

What to check

  • Liqueur coffees such as Irish coffee contain spirits.
  • Flavoured syrups are usually fine: see are coffee syrups halal?
  • Pastries sold with coffee may contain gelatine or lard.

Civet coffee

Kopi luwak is made from beans eaten and passed by civets. Scholars who have looked at it, including Indonesia's council of scholars, allow it once the beans are cleaned, because the bean itself is unchanged.
