Is It Halal to Celebrate Christmas?

Quick answer Scholars differ

Scholars differ. Most hold that Muslims should not celebrate Christmas as a religious festival. Many permit friendly gestures such as returning greetings, giving gifts to non-Muslim family and colleagues, and attending work events while avoiding alcohol and religious rituals; others discourage even that.

The stricter view

Celebrating another religion's festival is seen as imitating its beliefs, so greetings and participation are avoided.

The more lenient view

Many contemporary scholars, especially those writing for Muslims in the West, allow kind words and gifts as good manners (ihsan) toward neighbours and family, provided no religious belief is affirmed and nothing haram is consumed.

In practice

At work parties, choose soft drinks and halal or vegetarian food. See Christmas pudding for food to watch.
