Is Apple Cider Vinegar Halal?

Quick answer Halal

Yes, for most scholars. Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting apple juice into alcohol and then into vinegar; once it has fully turned into vinegar it is halal. Trace amounts that remain cannot intoxicate.

Also asked as: “Is cider vinegar halal?” · “Does apple cider vinegar contain alcohol?”

Why it is accepted

The majority view is that alcohol which has fully turned into vinegar is pure and halal — see balsamic vinegar and vinegar. Avoid drinks sold as "cider", which are alcoholic.

Apple cider vinegar and the mother

Cider vinegar is made in two stages. Apple juice ferments to alcohol, and bacteria then turn the alcohol to acetic acid. The cloudy sediment sold as the mother is a colony of those bacteria.

The finished vinegar contains a very small amount of alcohol, if any. Scholars who accept vinegar rely on the complete transformation of the alcohol. Capsules and gummies containing cider vinegar need the usual capsule check.
