Why many avoid it
The drink starts as wine, which is haram, and is designed to look and taste like it. Many scholars say this resemblance alone is reason to avoid it.
The more lenient view
Some scholars judge the drink by what it is now: if the alcohol is so low that no amount could intoxicate, they treat it like other foods with natural traces of alcohol.
In practice
Grape juice and sparkling grape drinks avoid the question entirely. See also is non-alcoholic beer halal?
